Dehydrated

Owen woke up from his nap this afternoon screaming and saying that his back hurt. He had mentioned his back hurting several other times over the past 2-3 days but we didn't think all that much of it honestly. He wasn't upset or anything any of those times and well, you know kids.

He kept at it and his regular pediatrician was out-of-town so I went ahead and took him to the ER. I am not normally one to rush to the ER but how often does a 2 year old really scream because their BACK hurts? It's an odd thing to complain about for a kid that age so it concerned me.

We got there and the dr. did a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia and then wanted a urine sample to check for a UTI. Well, Owen did not want to pee in a cup so they taped this bag thing on him and we waited. Three cups of juice, 2 glasses of water and 1.5 hours later, he pee'd.

Thankfully he didn't have a UTI but the test did show that he was dehydrated.

Okay, that's a new one on me. I guess because he had a fever yesterday and really wasn't drinking much (yes, we offered drinks), that he got dehydrated. The dr. said that it can cause the back, near the kidneys to hurt.

So - he is home, cup in hand, feeling better.
